Annual Christmas Party

We have begun a tradition of throwing Christmas parties for the families of Cahesse and Labadee  Haiti.  Last year was the first year of hosting these parties, and we set the bar pretty high!  The children had a great time with food, presents and games.

Please help us make this year another memorable event!  No gift is too small!  Matthew 10:42 tells us that giving just “a cup of cold water” will be rewarded.

Here are a few pictures from last years party.

Additional Info on New Church Roof

This is an excerpt from my communication with Mike Worthing regarding the roof construction project.

…The roof project was quite an undertaking.  God provided a carpenter that knew how to handle this project.  I had planned to do it in a standard truss construction, but the trusses would have been bigger than anyone wanted to handle.  His plan enabled us to build them in two pieces which was much easier to handle and did not require as much wood. It also gave it a cathedral ceiling 20’ high in the center. We ended up finishing a day early…

I do really enjoy working with the Haitians and it is a lot cheaper than bringing a team down from the States.  This was a good opportunity for the Haitians to get some real experience.  Everyone was amazed to see the project finished.  Hopefully I can send you some more pictures soon.

May God receive the praise and glory.

Looking forward to seeing more of those pictures!

Solar Light Distribution in Anse a Foleur

What follows is the official report of our light distribution in the region of Anse a Foleur which took place in early December 2010. There were many problems to overcome with this particular distribution: shipping delays, riots due to political anger, epidemics of disease and very bad weather.

Before we get to the report, I would like to point out a few significant facts regarding this effort.

  • It took more than SEVEN hours to climb the mountain to reach the distribution site.
  • Getting urgent medical care due to accidents and illnesses like cholera is incredibly dangerous in this mountainous region at night, without light.
  • The flashlights were an award for their efforts in improving themselves. This was not a handout.
  • The recipients are extremely grateful.

We at Coastal Haiti Mission are thankful for all of you who generously support this ministry.  Without your assistance, these people and many others would not receive the benefit of light in their lives.  Please know that your sacrifices made a material difference in someone’s life TODAY!

This is the report for the distribution of 20 lights to the PATIENCE GROUP. There is an additional report coming for the remaining 80 lights which will be coming soon.

Report on Distribution of Rechargeable Solar Flashlights in Badsentàn (Anse à Foleur)

Early Friday morning on 3 December 2010, I began the trip to Badsentàn. Since the route is very long, I was accompanied by a friend (Venel Florvil). We ascended to Limbé in a tap tap, and took a motorcycle taxi to the village of Obòy. We arrived in Obòy at 7:15 am, then started walking until we reached the community of Dival in the Badsentàn region at 2 25 pm. (Remember, there is no other way to reach this area except on foot or by helicopter).

Once we arrived, it began to rain. For the next two days we were there, the rain never stopped. I could assist in the distribution [of the flashlights] only to the “Patience” group [because of the weather conditions]. It is with great joy the people of “Patience” group (members of the larger organization called GIDEB), received this great gift. According to some of the members, this gift was directly from God.

I myself am the Protestant representative on the committee that will manage the health centers in the area that will serve people of Dipon, Dival, Dopòs, and Kadipon. I play the role of president on the committee. We go through a crisis every night. We have a lot of people with injuries and who have cholera who are admitted to the health centers. The flashlights that I received will help our nurses work better at night. The flashlight will help them move about at night to find the people who are sick and injured. When illness and injuries occur at night, the parents struggle to bring these people to the health centers because they have no light. We now have many people in the local area who will help out with this gift. They will use their flashlights to help people who need to go the health centers at night. I am happy to say a “big thank you” to those who made it possible for us to benefit from this great gift.

After Chalsius Jeantelus finished talking., everyone in attendance gave a huge, joyous applause. Many of the beneficiaries wanted to speak out to show how happy they were for this great gift. There were representatives of 14 families who were present out of the total of 20 who were selected to receive the gift. The 20 families received the gifts because of their attendance at meetings of the group, their participation in activities (working on the road and in garden, courtyard,…), attendance at larger GIDEB General Assembly, and who also had the need for a flashlight. (The “Patience” group has more than 40 active families.)

Rapò distribisyon lanp/flach ki rechaje nan solèy nan Badsentàn (Anse à Foleur)
Byen bonè nan maten Vandredi 3 Desanm 2010 la, Mwen te pran wout pou rive Badsentàn. Paske mwen konnen wout la long anpil, mwen te fè yon zanmi m (Venel Florvil) akonpaye mwen sou wout la. Nou te monte taptap pou rive nan Vil Lenbe (Limbé), nou pran taksi moto pou nou rive nan Vil Obòy (Borgne). Nou rive Obòy a 7 :15 AM epui nou kòmanse mache pou jis nou rive nan abitasyon Dival seksyon Badsentàn a 2 :25 PM. (Pa bliye, pa gen okenn lòt mwayen pou yon moun atenn zòn sa ankò. Se mache apye osinon nan yon elikoptè).

Depi nou rive, lapli komanse tonbe.

Kounye a nou gen plizyè moun nan lokalite a ki rive benefisye nan kado sa, yo pral mete flach yo a dispozisyon tout moun ki bezwen ale nan sant sante a lanwit. Mwen pwofite di yon gwo mèsi a moun ki fè nou benefisye gwo kado sa. Tout moun nan asistans la te bat gwo bravo lakontantman aprè Chalsius Jeantelus te fin pale. Anpil nan benefisyè yo te vle pale pou montre koman yo kontan anpil pou gwo kado sa. Te gen reprezantan 14 fanmi ki te prezan sou yon total de 20 ki te seleksyone pou resevwa kado a. 20 fanmi sa yo resevwa kado apati de prezans yo nan reyinyon selil la, patisipasyon yo nan aktivite yo (travay nan wout, nan jaden lakou…), prezans yo nan gran asanble jeneral GIDEB, epui nesesite yo gen pou yon lanp. (Selil Pasyans gen plis pase 40 fanmi aktif).

solar lighting matching challenge

“Lighting the Way”, the SunNight Solar flashlight matching challenge mentioned in the April 2010 Newsletter has been completed for 100 flashlights. The objective of this challenge was to provide solar flashlights to the people of Anse-a-Foleur and Jean Rabel, in North West Haiti. Wedens Pierre Decus, an agronomist, has been teaching 120 families in this area of Haiti, improved methods of growing food. Wedens, who requested the solar powered flashlights, has stated that these people must walk 5 hours from where they live to get to Anse-a-Foleur City to market their produce and conduct other business. These people have been using flaming torches made up of coconut leaves and branches to light their way. They leave their homes in this mountainous area at 3:oo A.M.

We at Coastal Haiti Mission are exceedingly grateful to all who participated in making this project a great success.

solar lighting web pages created

The Solar Lighting section of the Coastal Haiti Mission web site has been created. Please check the web pages at our web site under programs.
Every time we send a solar powered light, we make a significant improvement in a family’s quality of life. At the same time, we also make an improvement in the family’s financial life. Solar energy is free. Whatever money, that was previously spent for kerosene, candles or “throw away” batteries, can be redirected to other living expenses, such as food, water, and other family needs.

Tent Project

There are thousands of Haitian people living in “Sheet Tents” now.

CHM is working with Hope For Haiti to provide $50.00 tents (includes shipping to Haiti), for the homeless in Haiti. It is obvious that the “Sheet Tents” will not hold back rain so the need is great for a durable tent that can repel rain. At the present time we have received over $2,000 for this project. $2,000 = 40 tents! We have a long way to go, but past experience tells us that the American people are kind and generous. We will be grateful for any amount.

Last Sunday at Christ Church in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, (where Connie and I are members), two young Sunday School girls gave me cash totally $22.80 to go towards these tents. The girls had made cookies and sold them door-to-door in their neighborhood in order to raise funds for Haiti.

At the present time it is dangerous for people to try living in a home that is damaged. They live in the streets because they fear their home could collapse at any moment, that is, if they still have a home. JUST THIS MORNING THERE WAS A 4.7 AFTERSHOCK QUAKE IN HAITI . . . confirming the reason people live in the streets or a park.

Hope For Haiti has other projects at this time, too. They will soon receive orphaned, amputated children at their “Mission Of Hope.”
They are preparing space for 24 children and 6 Haitian house “mommies” right now.

To learn more about their ministry and their full report just posted on February 23, 2010 go to: www.hopeforhaitiinc.com
(Go to the right of your screen and click on RECENT HAITI UPDATE) you will be able to see a picture of the tent, too.

Bill Neusch is the President of “Hope For Haiti.” I have been on mission trips to Haiti with his father, Herman, and his wife, Janet,
and other members of their team. It is an organization worthy of your support.

If you are able to give a gift toward a tent it can be sent (in any amount) to:

Coastal Haiti Mission (Checks to CHM)

Pawleys Island, SC 29585

P.S. Even in the northern part of Haiti where CHM serves there are problems from heavy rain. A wall of a school building in Cap-Haitien collapsed killing 4 children last week, one of which a pastor friend of mine used to have in his congregation. He performed the funeral last Friday for this 9 year old girl. One donor has already committed to helping these four families that lost children.

WHEN THE LORD REMINDS YOU PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SUFFERING PEOPLE IN HAITI.

That you very much!
Clint, Connie, and Ken

Earthquake Distributions Made By CHM

As of February 10, 2010 Coastal Haiti Mission (CHM) has received a total of $12,175.12 from about 75 individuals and a few churches.

The following is a breakdown of how the money will be dispersed:

$3,031.28 to: WWW.HOMEBOUNDMISSIONS.ORG
$3,031.28 to: WWW.LUKESMISSION.COM
$3,031.28 to: WWW.MISSIONE4.COM
$3,081.28 to: WWW.NEWMISSIONS.ORG (Higher amount because a
donor requested their gift go to this organization)
————————————–
$12,175.12 Total dispersed by Coastal Haiti Mission on 2-11-2010.

All of the above mission organizations have done work in the earthquake areas and will do more in the future. They are reliable organizations and have a proven track record.

Coastal Haiti Mission recommends that you check out their websites for more information and additional earthquake reports.

CHM was able to support the earthquake mission work of Kerry Brenner, and nurse, Esther Stidham, with a gift of $500 each.

Even though the northern areas of Haiti where CHM works did not have buildings collapse, their work to feed and care for those in need in this area goes on and on and on.

You can check out the CHM website for more up to date information and details about us. (The site is getting a make over)

For incredible, (but sad) pictures of the earthquake disaster in Port-au-Prince that you won’t see on TV go to www.homeboundmissions.org for a look at the pictures Tyler Kangas took when in Haiti recently.

Any further earthquake donations given to CHM will be given to “Hope For Haiti” unless otherwise designated. I know the people in charge – have been on mission trips to Haiti with them. They are preparing a container full of tents for the people living in “Tents” made only of sheets off their beds, that is, if they had a bed to begin with. Conditions are difficult now, but when the rain comes to Port-au-Prince it will present another disaster to those who are only covered by a thin sheet. The tents appear to be of good quality and cost $187.00 each, which includes the shipping. Any amount given will be a blessing!

Of course, if you have a different burden for a mission group or person you would like to support in Haiti you can send it directly to them. But if in doubt about a mission organization, and you would like me to check out its track record in Haiti I’ll be glad to do so.

CHM is grateful to those who have been able to support the earthquake relief effort in any way.

Prayer . . . that petitions God for mercy for the suffering people in Haiti right now would be appreciated.

Very sincerely in Christ,

Clint Goddard
