Coastal Haiti Mission Newsletter
Water Sanitation Project Update
In the February 2018 CHM Newsletter, we introduced the Gift of Water Purifier. There is a long term water contamination problem in and around Cahess, which will not be corrected for many years. The contamination is the result of human and animal waste leeching into the ground water. The ground water supplies the many shallow wells that are located in the area. The untreated water from these wells is not safe to drink or to be used for brushing ones teeth. This untreated water is the likely source of many water borne diseases.
The Gift of Water Purifier is a low cost, low cost to operate, low maintenance, very durable, easy to use water purifier. This purifier is a very clever design with no moving parts. There are more than 10,000 of these units in the country of Haiti. This purifier will remove the parasitic diseases and kill any virus and bacteria that is present in the water that it treats.
This water purifier is a point of use device. This means that a purifier is needed in every home.
CHM requested that Gift of Water perform a Community Review of the Village of Cahess. This review has been done. It indicated that Cahess is in need of water purification for its many sources of water, but has no water purification system or program in place. The review also indicated that Cahess is an ideal community for the Gift of Water Program.
CHM also instituted a pilot program using 5 Gift of Water Purifiers in the school and one purifier in the church. We will be evaluating the performance of these 6 units, as well as introducing them to both the school children and to the adults. We will report on this pilot program in the April CHM Newsletter.
We will continue our first pilot program using liquid bleach, until the Gift of Water program is implemented in Cahesse.
School Lunch Program
Pastor Coty Writes:
Many places in the world, when people think about school, they concentrate on these items first: Books, notebooks, pencils, pens, etc..
In poor countries like mine, as an example, other items have priority. If you want the kids to keep coming to school to learn something, you often need to emphasize something else first, because they have something else on their minds. They often have hungry growling stomachs. Instead, they need to see a plate of rice and beans and sardines.
I know it’s not the way it should be, but I want to let you know that for most of the kids, the food that they eat at school, is the only food they will eat for the day.
I just want our supporters to know that they are a big blessing to many in Haiti, by contributing to the school lunch program.
Thank you very much.
Pastor Coty sent a second message:
I want to send a special thanks to those of you who constantly support our school lunch program in Cahess. Those of you who put our kids on your heart. Because of you, we are able to not only give those kids the bread of instruction but also the physical bread, that they need everyday.
These kids that you are supporting with this food, could spend days with no food to eat, if they don’t come to school.
Last December, we received the visit of a CHM board member with one of our supporters, I could see how blessed they felt to be able to serve food to the kids.
So please, if God puts in your heart to help those kids, do it for the sake of God, as the kids are really in need, here in Cahess.
For the month of April, we provide school lunch for 12 days.
It is true that we have only been able to provide the students lunch for some of the school days in March and April. We the leadership of CHM, do not want you to be discouraged. Instead, we desire that you rejoice over the many thousands of meals that have been provided to these children. We are asking our Heavenly Father to help us to provide the additional school lunches for these children. We all have limitations on what we are able to do. Also, our ability to donate to a ministry may vary from time to time.
We ask you to join us in interceding to our God, to meet the financial need of the school lunch program and to increase the number of CHM Family and Friends.
The cost of each school lunch is $0.50. Therefore $10.00 will provide 20 lunches. If you would like to help provide lunch for these students, please send your donation in any amount to the CHM address at the end of this newsletter, and designate it for the school lunch program.
Food for the Poor Program
Pastor Coty writes:
The food program is a good connection to the needy people in Cahess. I don’t have a better way to describe it more, than it gives them hope. Hope, because they know when the food is distributed, their hunger will be eased for a while. Many experience the love of Christ by receiving this food, because they don’t have anywhere else to go.
Thanks to you, the Family and Friends of CHM
The cost of the Food for Poor Program is $300 per month. The money used for this program is taken from undesignated donations. We are dependent on undesignated offerings to continue this program. You may also designate donations for the Food for the Poor Program.
